Honey
Q1: What is Mānuka honey?
A1: Mānuka [ ma·nu·ka ] honey comes from the nectar of the flower of the Mānuka bush (Leptospermum scoparium) which is indigenous to New Zealand.
Q2: Why should I buy UMF™ certified Mānuka honey?
A2: UMF™ certifies that the Mānuka honey you purchase has been independently been tested and contains the unique properties that consumers are looking for. The UMF™ mark assures you that these key signature compounds are present in license-holders’ products. Melora is a trusted UMF™ license holder. Our license number is #2015.
Find out more information on UMF™ Guarantee page.
Q3: What does the UMF™ grading mean?
A3: The UMF™ grading system has two components which are expressed on any UMF™ honey product.
Label – The label claim that it is genuine Manuka Honey
Number – this represents the strength of the unique signature compounds characteristic of this honey which ensure purity and quality. These include: the key markers of Leptosperin, DHA and Methylglyoxal. View relations between UMF™ grades and MG (Methylglyoxal) levels (mg/kg).
Q4: What are the differences between UMF™ and MGO/MG Mānuka honeys?
A4: MGO and MG both are an abbreviation of Methylglyoxal which is one of the three compounds tested for used as a measure to grade Mānuka honey by some companies. Methyglyoxal is a key unique compound naturally occurring in New Zealand Mānuka honey. However, Methyglyoxal is heat sensitive and may vary due to change of the environmental conditions.
UMF™ certification can only be used by licensees whose production facility complies with UMF™ quality standards, whose products are tested and verified by independent laboratories before going to market and whose product samples in the market are also regularly audited by independent companies. However, there’s not an independent Code of Practice for companies using MG/MGO grading system to follow nor an independent auditing organisations to monitor MG/MGO Honey’s quality and authenticity in the marketplace.
Q5: Why is Melora® UMF™ Mānuka honey claimed to be ethically and sustainably sourced?
A5: Melora® share percentages of honey sales between Mānuka resources owners, beekeepers and us the honey processing company.
By using a fair share benchmark that is higher than the industry standard, we are able to continually support landowners to guard, protect and nurture Mānuka plants, leading to a sustainable future together.
Our Ethical Honey Harvesting programme also sets out clear quality policies and procedures for all harvest and apiary operators working with us. The aim of this programme is to protect the bees and hives from risk of contamination, to protect the environment during harvesting and to keep our people safe through the process.
Q7: Why does Mānuka honey appear to differ in colour and texture?
A7: Mānuka honey is a natural product, influenced by seasonal and regional conditions. Some areas produce paler honey than others. Mānuka honey might also grow in flavour and darken with age.
Q8: What are the ideal storage conditions for Mānuka honey?
A8: Please store your Mānuka honey in a cool dry place under 21 degrees Celsius. Frequent or large change of temperature might affect Mānuka honey’s texture and UMF™ levels.

A9: Yes, all Melora honey bear the OU Kosher mark.
